STANISLAUS CONNECTIONS
22nd Annual Peace Camp

Camp for People of All Ages
Camp Peaceful Pinesnear Pinecrest, California
Friday, June 25 - Sunday, June 27, 2004Peace Camp offers a weekend of stimulation and renewal in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Twenty-one years ago we first gathered at Camp Peaceful Pines as a community working for peace and justice. Over the years we have built many traditions around talking, learning, singing, hiking, eating and relaxing together. The mountain setting is incomparable and the relief from the Valley heat is welcome. The night sky is awe-inspiring. The food and the community are wonderful.
If you are a regular participant, we’re waiting for you. If you haven’t come for a while, we’re waiting for you. If you are a newcomer, we’re waiting for you. Please join us for the 2003 Peace Camp.
Register now. The deadline for the early registration reduced fee is June 6.

From 'Violence to
Wholeness' at Peace Camp
By PATRICK MCGINNIS
No one can deny that war is the ultimate expression of violence. The Iraq and Afghanistan wars are well-publicized, yet, there are dozens of smaller conflicts throughout the world the press pays little attention to such as the Congo, Columbia, and Israel. There are other forms of violence also receiving little attention. A group from the Tuolumne County Citizens for Peace have just finished a 10-chapter course called From Violence to Wholeness which explores in depth all forms of violence and nonviolent responses to such acts. The course was created by the Pace e Bene ("peace and all good" in Italian) Nonviolence Service based in Las Vegas, NV.
The first two chapters explicate the experience and dynamics of violence in our lives and in the world. The following six chapters portray people who have used nonviolence to transform the world. Courageous figures such as Jesus, Dr. M. L. King, Cesar Chavez, St. Francis, and Gandhi and their roles in transforming society through nonviolent activism, are discussed. The final two chapters show how to live and work in a nonviolent group or community. At this summer's Peace Camp, we will offer an overview of this course in the hope that others may become involved and offer the course in their areas. Check the camp schedule for the time of our presentation.

Unwind
and have fun at Peace Camp
By
RICHARD HARVEY
In the current atmosphere
of Iraq spinning out of control, the election diatribes and the general hubbub
of our lives, Peace Camp is a chance to catch your breath, relax, enjoy nature
at it's finest and commune with friends. You have great surroundings, an
interesting and stimulating program from which you can choose topics that
interest you or, meditate and enjoy nature by yourself. And, some how the food
always tastes better at Peace Camp due to who knows, the altitude, hiking,
surroundings or, of course, the cooks.
The camp site at Camp
Peaceful Pines is breath taking in its beauty. The cool breezes whispering
through the tall fragrant pine trees and the sounds of the gurgling stream
flowing through the middle of the camp on the way the river nearby. The majestic
granite mountains forming the valley we are snuggled in are awesome to behold.
We are very fortunate to have such a fantastic place for Peace Camp.
This year’s program
includes several different hikes of varying lengths. There will also be nature
walks to highlight the area’s natural beauty and help us understand it better.
The camp also has recreational facilities; ping pong, horse shoes, volley ball.
Crafts will be available for the children or anyone interested. We have seen a
high level of creativity at past camps.
The adult program consists
of presentations and discussions on topics such as "From Violence to
Wholeness," presented by a group from Sonora’s Tuolumne County Citizens
for Peace which has been involved in an extensive course on this topic (see
McGinnis article, this page).
There will also be a
session on “World Order for World Peace,” presented by Lorrie Freitas.
On the lighter side, there
is always good singing coaxed out of us by the Spirit Singers from Sonora. The
group singing is always enhanced by a warm crackling campfire and smores. The
talent show is always entertaining with everyone encouraged to participate, so,
if you play a musical instrument, bring it along, or anything else you need to
share your talents. Also, Alexis and Kelly will again share Hula talents with us
and teach anyone interested.
ACTION:
Come to Peace Camp; a rare gem and a bargain for the price. Hope to see you
there.
